Egyptology Research Group – Aegean Egyptology

Egyptology at the University of the Aegean

In 2001, with the support of the 3rd Community Support Framework (EPEAEK II, 2001-2004), the Department of Mediterranean Studies: Archaeology, Linguistics, International Relations began staffing itself with new teaching, research, and administrative personnel. Within this framework, the academic subject of “Archaeology of Egypt and the Near East” was advertised for the first time in a Greek Higher Education Institution, a position filled with the election of P. Kousoulis in 2003. With the advancement of the position to subsequent academic ranks, the subject was initially renamed “Archaeology of Egypt” (2007) and subsequently “Egyptology” (2016). The purpose of this renaming was to emphasize the distinct character of Egyptological science within the broader archaeology of the Southeastern Mediterranean and the Near East—a character rooted in the specific geographical focus of this discipline and the consequent, necessary co-examination of the diverse archaeological, historical, and linguistic/philological aspects of the culture it studies.

In 2003, the “Aegean Egyptology” Research Group was founded, establishing a modern hub for the research, study, and promotion of the cultural remains, ideas, and symbols of the ancient Egyptian civilization, as well as its intercultural interactions within the broader Eastern Mediterranean basin. Aegean Egyptology collaborates closely with the Department’s Laboratory for the Ancient World of the Eastern Mediterranean (founded in 2015) in conducting innovative, interdepartmental research programs and educational seminars, organizing international conferences and specialized workshops, and teaching specialized courses in Egyptology and Near Eastern archaeology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
